A.Area: The total
geographical area of the division is 160 sq.km.
B.Location: It is
located at Chhumliamkawn, Hermon veng, Khawzawl in the north-eastern part of
Mizoram and falls under Champhai district.
C.History of the
Division: Khawzawl Wildlife Division was established on 06.10.2008. The two
Protected Areas under the division namely; Murlen National Park and Lengteng
Wildlife Sanctuary are surrounded by 14 (fourteen) fringe villages.

1. Murlen
National Park was constituted Vide notification No. B.12012/5/94-FST Dated
24th January, 2003 covering
an area of 100 Sq. km. Geographically, it lies between 23° 32' – 23° 42' N
latitude and 93° 13' – 93° 27' E longitude in the north east of Mizoram. It
lies at an altitude of 400m – 1900m above msl. The Park field administration
headquarter is at Rabung. The whole area is covered by dense virgin forests
with bamboo brakes.
The forest type as per Champion and Seth’s
classification is Montane sub-tropical forests and Tropical wet-evergreen
forests. The dominant tree species Acrocarpus fraxinifolia, Catanopsis
tribuloides, Michelia spp. Phoebia sp, Prunus sp. Litsea sp. Bischofia javanica,
Quercus sp, Schima wallichii, Rhodendron sp, Bauhinia sp, etc.
Some of the important fauna and avifauna inside the
Protected Area include Clouded leopard, Malayan sun bear, Goral, Sambar, Serow,
Barking deer, Marbled cat, Capped langur, Hoolock gibbon, Phayre’s leaf monkey,
Rhesus macaque, Stump tailed macaque, Slow loris, jungle cat, Wild dog, Indian civet, Wild pig,
Hume’s bartailed pheasant, Red jungle fowl, Bamboo patridge, Oriental Pied
Hornbill, Great Hornbill, Imperial pigeon, Green pigeon, Emerald Dove, Cuckoo
Dove, Spotted Dove, Hill patridge, Wood peckers, Shikra, Crested serpent eagle,
Brown wood owl, Hoopoe etc.
2. Lengteng
Wildlife Sanctuary was constituted in 2002 Vide No. B.12012/5/94-FST Dated
3rd May, 2002 covering an area of 60 Sq. km. Geographically, it lies
between 23° 21' 18'' – 23° 30' 01'' N latitude and 93° 55' 30'' – 93° 50' 37''
E longitude in the north east of Mizoram. The Sanctuary field administration
headquarter is at Lamzawl. The whole area is covered by dense virgin forests
with bamboo brakes.

Clerodendron sp (Phuihnam), Woodfordia sp (Ainawn).Solanum sp (Tawkpui).
Tree fern (katchat), Lantana sp (Shillong tlangsam),etc.
Herb
species :
Ageratum sp (Vaihlenhlo), Blumea alata (Buar), Urena lobata(Sehnap),etc.
Grasses :
Saccharum sp(luang), Broom grass (Hmunphiah), Dhup grass,etc.
7.Fauna:
Herbivores : Sambar
(Sazuk), Barking Deer (Sakhi), Serow (Saza) & Goral (Sathar).
Carnivores
: Tiger
(Sakei), Leopard (Keite), Clouded Leopard (Kelral), Jungle Cat (Sauak), Wild
dog (Chinghnia), Burmese Ferret Badger (Sahmaitha).
Primate : Hoolock
gibbon (Hauhuk), Capped langur (Ngau), Rhesus macaque (Zawng), Assamese macaque
(Zawng) & Slow loris (Sahuai).
Omnivorous
: Himalayan
Black Bear (Savawm), Wild boar (Sanghal), Civet cats (Sazaw) etc.
Reptiles : Burmese
Python (Saphai), Common Indian Rat snake (Rulhlai), Green- pit-viper (Rultuha)
etc.
Avifauna : Partridges,
Red jungle fowl, Hume’s Pheasant, Kaleej Pheasant, Woodpecker, Barbet,
Hornbill, Cuckoo, Parakeet, Owl, Dove, Eagle, Pitta, Leafbird, Magpie, Minivet,
Warbler, etc.

The two PAs provide
shelter and protection to important rare and endangered animal and bird species
namely; Phayre’s leaf monkey,Hoolock gibbon,Clouded
leopard,Pangolin,Goral,Serow,Pied hornbill,Mrs.Hume’s bartailed pheasant and
other bird species that are mentioned in the Red Data Book, Appendices of CITES
and in Schedules of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
